OCTOBER EVENT PT2

premisetakenfaqnavigation

THE BEGINNING

(click to expand - happy early Halloween)It's on the evening of October 28th when everything quickly descends into madness.

It begins with faint static in the air, gradually becoming louder and louder until it's impossible to ignore, the pattern of cries that was once hidden now audible to everybody as it grows and grows until it culminates in an explosion. The walls of the local bookstore burst outwards, a rampaging Hydreigon within unleashing Hyper Beam after Hyper Beam without any rest in between. Its trainer, an old man, hobbles up to it in a panic in order to ask what's wrong, but the Pokemon knocks him to the ground, ignoring him and continuing to destroy everything in its path while its trainer lies motionless on the ground, blood pouring from his head.

Further down the street, another eruption shakes the city, a group of Galarian Rapidashes slamming themselves against walls and windows until they break through, careening and crashing through buildings with wild abandon. Occupants inside a cafe scream as they attempt to flee, crushed under rubble and trampled by merciless hooves. From the sky, Murkrows and Natus swoop down on residents on the streets, long talons outstretched to claw at any exposed skin and pluck out any staring eyes. All around the city, Pokeballs burst open on their own and the Pokemon rush madly at human and Pokemon alike, disregarding orders or pleads from their trainers and attacking anything within sight in a wild frenzy.

Fires blaze across the city as children wail and adults scream. All the while, the pattern of cries continues...

THE RAMPAGE

(click to expand - you're in for a bad time)Throughout the night, dark, ghost, and psychic-type Pokemon rampage throughout Mango City. Wild Pokemon appear from the outskirts of town and attack anyone and anything on sight, while companion Pokemon force themselves out of their balls and turn upon their trainers. No other types seem to be affected, the other Pokemon just as confused and distraught as the humans as they're forced to run from, defend against, and fight the Pokemon they were once allied with.

While many of the mad Pokemon physically assault those around them, other use innate abilities to wreak havoc. Musharnas emit a dark mist that engulfs entire beings and brings their fears to reality, forcing all those within the fog to face the same delusions. At the same time, Shedinjas steal souls away in their shells and keep them captive in a shared endless nightmare of their worst experiences relived. Similarly, Beheeyems cause those nearby to reexperience their most feared and hated moments, erasing all memory after that moment in order to trap their victims in that vulnerable mindset of the past. Meanwhile, Zoroarks trap their targets within grand illusions that force them to undergo a series of deaths over and over again, causing them excruciating pain and suffering while their physical bodies continue to live. Haunters phase in and out of walls to surprise and lick their victims, sapping years off their life and causing a frigid shivering that won't stop until they wither away, and Gengars loom in the shadows, sapping heat away from its surroundings and causing the small and the weak to slowly freeze to death. Umbreons spray poisonous sweat all over the street, causing people to choke and convulse if they stay too long near the toxic areas, and Cofagriguses drag humans into their coffins and wrap them up as mummies, bound so tightly nobody can hear them scream. No amount of pleading nor bargaining will cause any of them to stop; the only option left is to defeat them in battle, either by killing them or knocking them out.

It'd be kinder to do the latter, but in the heat of the moment, it's difficult to hold back. It's desperate times, after all, as the city streets soon begin to fill with the cold and still bodies of both Pokemon and humans.

HELP...?

(click to expand - is anyone even sane enough left to help)At the outskirts of town bordering the forest, herds of Stantler lead the unaffected and helpless deeper into the forest into an area where the trees are so densely packed that even the shine of the moon can't break through. The only source of light are the small Litwicks that scurry towards the humans, smiling and holding out their little hands. Follow them. They'll keep you safe(?).

Perhaps it's time to abandon the city, where the fires continue to grow and rage throughout the streets, threatening to engulf entire neighborhood blocks. The hospital and Pokemon Center get repurposed to disaster zones as the doctors and nurses struggle to treat their patients while fending off rampaging Pokemon at the same time. Mari's large Steelixes wrap themselves around the buildings to become iron walls keeping the wild Pokemon out, but even their great defense struggles against the never ending attacks.

In the midst of the ongoing disaster, the radio tower remains undamaged and completely abandoned, untouched by the rampaging Pokemon outside. The receptionist has fled long ago, leaving the front doors open but the door to the stairs and the elevator up remaining locked. The tower stands empty and silent, completely free of the static and pattern of cries playing outside, the one place of reprieve from the hell that has descended upon Mango City.

[A familiar hand falls on Sagi's shoulder after he makes his proclamation.]

If it is the source of this, I am coming too.

[Hythlo has certainly seen much better days. Even with the mask he looks like he hasn't slept in ten years, his bare arms are covered in bite and scratch marks, his voice is quiet and full of cold fury. He's back in his skintight top-and-shorts outfit, but the familiar glittery fabric on his arms and a leg suggest that someone had to improvise bandages.]
scension: (Freezing Rain)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-16 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
[The improvised bandages don't escape Sagi's notice. Hythlodaeus is too tall to really escape notice, in general. It's been a decent way of loosely avoiding bothering him since the middle of the month. Sagi just has more pressing priorities tonight.]

We don't know if it's the source of the noise, or - Atsushi said it could be receiving it from elsewhere. [Atsushi, noted tech expert.] But the noise was coming out from the antenna up top all month. I'm going to go break it.

[Maybe he wouldn't have gotten them banned from there if he'd known the right questions to ask, and could have headed all this off somehow... He doesn't entertain the notion for long. That's water under the bridge. Here and now, it's given him a lead.]

I won't lie, it'll be dangerous. Did you already get those cuts looked at?

[He looks like a mess even ignoring the scrapes and bites, honestly. ...Is that Sagi's fault? Hopefully not.]

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-16 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Unbeknownst to Sagi, right now Hythlo almost welcomes the sight of his mutilated essence: between the memories visited upon him and the chaos in the streets, it's almost a secondary matter as long as Sagi is alive and kicking. At least this one wasn't the fault of Hythlo's inaction.

He shakes his head dismissively. Right now, his injuries are the least of his problems.]

It looks worse than it is. You say the tower is a beacon?

[He folds his arms, looking away. In other circumstances he might have been less forthcoming with information, but this is the opposite of normal.]

The noise creates distortions within the life force. Brief ones. Tiny waves. It is a living thing. I would find it.

[As his sentences grow shorter, his whole body tenses, his breath coming shorter as well. He's having trouble keeping himself under control.]
scension: (* Godspeed the Ice)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-16 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That must have been what the eyes were...

[Belatedly, he noticed Hythlo tensing up, driving that particular recollection out of his mind. He steps closer, forgetting himself.]

Sure you'll be okay? You don't look so good.
weenwoon: (causer of problems has logged in)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-16 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[Once again, the concern is brushed off in favour of figuring things out.]

... What eyes? And do not concern yourself with me. No one is alright right now.
scension: (Yesterbean Variant)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-16 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, he's not wrong. Nobody is okay on nights when people die. That explanation makes enough sense to Sagi for him to drop the issue.]

The essence of the sound. We trapped it in a magnus to see what it looked like... uh, it's like how they capture Pokemon here, but not for living things. [Whatever, it gets the gist across.] But yeah, it had all these weird eyes. And it seemed stronger when we trapped it again on the roof.

[He doesn't have either of those magnus on him any more, thankfully. The fact that his Pokemon didn't seem to like them should maybe have been a warning sign...]
weenwoon: (causer of problems has logged in)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-17 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
[Hythlo nods at Sagi's explanation of how magnus work. To him, it sounds like the blueprint of a concept of sorts, but derived from a creation instead of being used to construct it in the first place.]

Let us go. If the creature is not visible to naked eye, then I may be able to see something there.

[Either way, let's just go. He feels that if he stops to think about the things that he had to see today, he'll break.

Suddenly, there's a pathetic chittering sound from the folds of his hood, and his Joltik pokes her head out, looking around worriedly. Aren't things fixed yet? :(

Hythlo raises a hand to gently ruffle the Pokemon's fur.]

... Should aught happen, I would ask you to take care of Pasithea.
scension: (* Fire Forged)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-17 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Sagi opens his mouth, but isn't sure exactly how reassuring he should try to be in the moment. He can't in good conscience tell Hythlo not to worry. He certainly saw people outside, some of whom didn't even outwardly look as beaten up as Hythlo right now, who won't be coming home any more.

The Snom on his shoulder chitters back at Pasithea. Nothing is getting at the baby if she can help it!]

I will. I promise.

[He turns to leave. They'll have to move a little slower than he intended, but bringing that up would only waste more time.]

We'll make sure it doesn't come to that. Come on. Stick close.

[Out the door, past Mari's grimly determined Steelixes, back into fire and terror and death.]
weenwoon: (contemplating the cheased burger)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-17 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hythlo takes in a deep breath before stepping outside, as if trying to will away the visions of burning Amaurot that the chaos in the streets brings. He has to remember that this is not his past, this is not his fault, and the sooner they deal with the source, the better.

As they half-walk, half-run, Hythlo tries to keep his gaze straight ahead, ignoring the sounds of destruction and occasional screams around them, trying to focus on his thoughts and what Sagi shared with him. The noise is coming from the top of the tower, and it's likely a living creature... but quite likely one invisible to people, because surely something capable of inflicting such devastation and influencing other Pokemon so much must be a sizeable presence, whether physically or mentally. Some sort of spirit, perhaps? There is the cemetery tower right next to it, after all, and the flow of aether in this land is so weak and disjointed, a good number of them do not make it back into the lifestream, hanging back instead. Some sort of sentient amalgamation of them...]

I wonder what it wants. What is the point of all this destruction? Feeding on pain and fear?

[But... why now? Did it awaken somehow? The image that comes to Hythlo's mind is of an egg or a cocoon hatching, the creature inside emerging full of hunger. Like a caterpillar that wastes no time to start devouring the leaf...]
scension: (* True Hellpike)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-17 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Maybe the destruction is the point... Maybe it thinks we did something.

[His tone isn't dismissive, but Sagi has little mind for speculation, especially when walking into what amounts to enemy territory. His attention is on their surroundings, looking this way and that as he leads Hythlo through the streets. They can hide in the walls, they can swoop down from the air... He doesn't want to take any chances.

At the first sign of movement in a side alley, he tenses up, motioning Hythlo to stop too. But what was it? He can't see yet.]
weenwoon: (fate follows)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-18 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Hythlo freezes when Sagi motions to him cautiously, fighting the urge to plaster himself against the wall. He barely has anything to fight off the wild Pokemon with, and he wants to save Pasi's energy for the tower itself. The poor bug has been through much today already.

It seems like the shadow in the alley notices their presence, as well: the darker shape freezes in place, then slowly shifts its weight and turns, trying to triangulate on their position--there is a sniffing sound, as though the thing uses its sense of smell to navigate...

Hythlo grits his teeth. He has run into these things today, and it was only his luck that there were others around to bail him out. But he's seen the corpses of the other victims, as well...

He slowly shifts his center of gravity, readying to dash or lunge ahead, Pasi on his shoulder fluffing herself up to produce electricity easier...

But while Hythlo's eyes are focused on the shadow of the Zoroark, what he really should have been looking at is his back. Two shadowy arms silently, suddenly, almost gently curl around him... and pull.]

Argh--

[At least he manages a sound that should at least give Sagi a warning that it's not just one terror they have to deal with, before lengths of bandage wrap around his throat and mouth, choking all sound, other tendrils slithering down his arms to immobilize them. Pasithea, startled by the sudden ambush, squeaks and spits an electrifying web at the Cofagrigus--it might save Hythlo's life, because it seems to slow the advance of the wraps as Hythlo struggles in the Pokemon's sinister embrace.]
scension: (Primordial Cactus)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-18 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hythlodaeus?!

[The sound is enough. Sagi whips around in his tracks and rushes over, turning his back on the Zoroark. He doesn't like to, but he likes the idea of turning his back on Hythlo even less. Nobody should have to die twice.]

Both of you, focus fire on the ghost!

[Marshtomp takes this to mean spitting Mud Shots at the Cofagrigus, while Snom hops onto her head fin from Sagi's shoulder and begins puffing Powder Snow.

Meanwhile, as he reaches the maddened ghost Pokemon, Sagi draws his dagger from the magnus in his pocket.]

Guide my hand...!

[It's just a mumble to himself before he goes for the bandages wrapping around Hythlo's throat from behind his head, intent on hacking them apart. They're tough and stretchy - a couple of the ends cling unpleasantly to his gloves, which he can worry about later - but they're yielding. Of course, the blade is probably a lot closer to Hythlo's head than Hythlo would like.]

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-19 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[Unfortunately, without Marno's braincell Sagi's hand is very bad at being guided. He slits Hythlo's throat by accident, killing him instantly. Somewhere, a Dark Services bookkeeper grudgingly writes out a cheque for Sagi's first successful assassination.

... or such is the illusion some nearby Musharna considers, and decides against on the basis of its sheer stupidity.

The Cofagrigus screams as it's blasted with both ice and mud, and the latter soaks its bandages, makes them heavy, hardly possible to move. Hythlo himself manages to understand what Sagi is going for, even if at the last moment, and jerks himself forward, stretching the bandages more to make it easier for Sagi to cut them. Of course, this also means he's cutting off his air supply further and might damage his throat. He did not say this was a good plan.

Fortunately for the both of them, Sagi manages to cut Hythlo free, and the man falls to his knees, gasping for air. He's not quite so stupid to have forgotten the Zoroark, though, and whips his head up as soon as he's able to see if the creature has moved yet.

Sagi, however, has other things to worry about now. With how close he's gotten to the ghost, it seems to change its plan of attack, grabbing onto him with all four arms, sliding open the parts of its body in a maddened attempt to swallow the boy into itself. And in addition to that, there is indeed an outline at the alley mouth, behind Marshtomp and Snom...

All Hythlo manages to think is that they can't get trapped in the illusion, and so his next move is all instinct and nothing else.]

Sorry, Pasi--

[He grabs the spider and launches her at the creeping Zoroark with a flick of his wrist. He is a big man, she is a small spider, and she travels at an impressive speed and with a terrified squeak... which resolves into a flash of ball lightning aimed at the Zoroark's head.]
scension: (Fluella Cooties)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-19 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sagi could at this point embark on a new, more successful career of getting immobilised by things with too many arms. His Pokemon, however, are too young and wide-eyed to allow that to happen. As the Cofagrigus turns away from them, they keep up their attacks, pelting the back of its sarcophagus. Then, finally - luckily - the Cofagrigus's arms freeze, its movements stymied by a buildup of hardened ice.

It's just enough. Sagi yanks himself back, stifling a pained noise - it's going to bruise, that thing has way too heavy a grip for a ghost - and hurtles further out of grabbing range on his wings, almost crash landing but for a last second clatter of feathers. Once again, this experience has taught him nothing about planning.]

G... Good job.

[At that moment, the Zoroark lets out a fox-like scream and flails angrily. Pasithea may not have impeded it the way she managed with the Cofagrigus, but she sure scored a near direct hit to the eyes!]

... The other one... No.

[They technically have the numbers advantage, but not the raw strength. Best to hit the ghost while it's down and create a better opening. He waves his Pokemon back onto the Cofagrigus before they can get distracted, then hurries over to Hythlo.]

When the ghost is down, just run! We don't have time for this.

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-20 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hythlo nods briefly.]

Pasithea, return!

[He's not leaving his spider daughter to be eaten by the fox, alright. Fortunately, she's already scuttling towards him at high speed, sproings onto his outstretched hand and quickly climbs into his hood, chittering at him both worriedly and reproachfully. Don't just throw her! You're supposed to be fixing things!

Cofagrigus, meanwhile, gives one last agonized creak as the remnants of its bandages stop flailing and the fire in its eyes goes out. It slumps to the ground, almost falling apart, but it seems like it's knocked out rather than dead, exactly. Either way, it won't be getting up anytime soon. The Zoroark is still growling and yapping, clutching at its head to try and get the buzzing aftershock of taking some lighting to the face out... Looks like they have their chance.

Hythlo dashes forward from his starting position, Pasi beeping angrily and trying to suck up some more static from his body--the one advantage of having long hair under a hood. He feels briefly guilty about not looking back at Sagi, but he's pretty certain that the boy actually has a better turn of speed than himself, what with the wings and all. Of course, he would instantly turn around if he realized something happened to Sagi, but right now he doesn't want to be the one slowing them down. With just one Pokemon, he's the more vulnerable out of them two, after all.]
scension: (Hot Rock)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-20 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[As soon as the Cofagrigus falls, Sagi recalls his Pokemon - it's becoming a reflex to him by now, if still a clumsier motion than a hand of magnus would be - and makes his own break for it. Maybe surprisingly, though as always he's acting on instinct, he just takes off at a run. The tower is some blocks away yet, with who knows how many ambushes hidden in between. Best not to wear his heart out ahead of time.

He catches up with Hythlo fairly quickly despite his shorter stride. Presently, outside a storefront that appears to have had its upper floor almost completely gouged out, he comes to a halt.]

I don't think they followed us. [It does appear that way for now, and the storefront is silent. Maybe one of the distant screams suffusing the static in the air is a victim the Zoroark got hold of in their place, maybe not. No point in dwelling on it.] How's your neck?

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-21 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[He raises a hand to his throat.]

Should be fine. Hurts to speak, somewhat.

[Finally, the one thing to make Hythlodaeus shut up.]

Thank you.

[He gives Sagi a short bow, then looks up at the bulk of the tower looming in the distance.]

Forward?

[Well, Hythlo's clearly been affected by tonight, and not just because of getting strangled half to death. There's a bitterness to him, together with a deep exhaustion. He's been hallucinating pretty much nonstop, and it's hard enough to keep reality straight without spending energy on thinking about things to say.]
scension: (Freezing Rain)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-21 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[His terseness is obvious, but could mean anything, not just physical injury. They've covered enough distance that getting back to the Pokemon Centre would be just as much of a trek as pushing on, and Hythlo seems more inclined toward the latter, so Sagi doesn't bring it up for now. Still, he can't help hesitating.]

Do you... see anything yet? Anything clearer?

[Anything to keep them on track, make sure they're not out here for longer than they need to be.]
weenwoon: (fate follows)

cw some gore imagery?

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hythlo gives another nod. He understands what Sagi means, and it's something he's been wondering about, too... But today has been very... hard, and between the way the rampant destructive energy messes with everything and how much Hythlo has strained himself already, it's not such an easy task.

He removes his mask, rubs his eyes to give them a brief respite. Takes a deep breath, looks up...

The rampaging Ghosts and Psychic-types are easy - black holes of energy, both blasting it out and sucking it in. Looking at them just hurts his eyes. The Zoroarks are harder, he has to discern the aether of a living thing to detect them. Everything looks like... some kind of abstract painting, colours and lines piled together in a mess, making it hard to see any particular thing. But... every time that brief, shrill noise sounds, he can see those strange wavy distortions. And he's certain they're getting more prominent here.]

The tower is the source. Or close to it. We should--

[Something that has been nagging at his subconscious for the last few moments finally manages to break through. Out of the corner of his eye... The mist. The dark mist. Another one of those illusion-makers? He spins around, intent on figuring out where the hell it is and which direction they should run in to escape--

The mist is not coming from a Musharna at all.

Much like on that day, he freezes, staring at Sagi. He thought he'd gotten... used to the sight of his soul, in a sense, the same way someone builds up resillience by simple repetition, but this time...

It actually hurts to look at the boy: the undead piece within him is leaking some sort of black smoke, and it does not seem like the simple steaming of cooling flesh. It moves almost with a purpose and without ceasing, spreading out like a coat behind Sagi, like it's trying to... to... protect him? As Hythlo watches, both horrified and confused, he can see the tendrils of the smoke almost grab at the incomplete, butchered parts of Sagi's soul, as though intent on replacing the missing pieces, restoring the severed lifelines, making him whole again.

But within it all he can see the shape of... a creature, a monster, one that seems to exist at the same time as Sagi himself, the images seesawing back and forth, occupying the same space without cancelling each other out. One second he's looking at Sagi, the other he can see a clawed arm with unpleasantly squirming tentacles, the green of his hair, four burning eyes staring at him, the iridescent feathers, scarred flesh with pulsating orange veins through it...]

Urrgh--

[He clutches at his head, stumbles back. He feels like he's gone blind, and his eyes hurt. But, perhaps, the one good thing--if such it could be called--is that now he finally understands what Sagi might have meant back then about being lucky. Horrific or no, it seems like the union is almost... benevolent.]
scension: (Coliseum Dog-Tags)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-21 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hythlodaeus is staring at him again.

A chill runs down Sagi's spine. He... should have thought twice about asking, really. He could have... stood aside? Backed off entirely? He doesn't know how this unsettling magic of Hythlo's works. He still can't begin to guess what it is - what image he could possibly be presenting that, with a burning sea of torture and death stretching out in every direction, an omnipresence in the air powerful enough to flood out so many sentient hearts at once, Hythlodaeus is staring at him again.

He opens his mouth to say something to the man - to ground him or to disrupt him, he isn't sure - but then Hythlo staggers, and the thought flies out of Sagi's head.]

Hey!

[He rushes over. He can't hope to support Hythlo's whole weight, and anyway it's hard to know where to grab him for support without making things worse, but he can't just stand by. The buckling, the head-clutching, the groan of obvious pain... they all hit a little close to home. He makes do with throwing one arm across Hythlo's back, as high up as he can reach, and holding the other around his side.]

Stay with me! What's wrong?!

[Another ambush? That would reflect pretty badly on him, if he can't even assess the state of a single street without messing up... but maybe those implications would be kinder than the alternative.]
weenwoon: (fate follows)

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-21 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[Well, if it's any consolation, Hythlo grabs onto him for support pretty readily, trying to shift his weight so that he avoids falling, but without putting all his weight on Sagi. He knows he's a big man.

He's breathing heavily, though, one hand pressed across his eyes, screwed shut.]

J-Just--strain...

[Well, it's not wrong. If they had more time, he would have been more troubled by the implications of what he saw, but this time it's the sheer physical (psychological?) discomfort caused by trying to see two things at once, in addition to the strain he's already been putting on his eyes. He doesn't know if it's because of all the strange things happening tonight, or if it's just some sort of strange evolution of Sagi's soul, or something that happens when the boy is under duress... but it's very uncomfortable to watch, as though Sagi is a being of several dimensions being confined to the usual four. A part of him wonders if he feels confined.]
scension: (Freezing Rain)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-21 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
...I shouldn't have asked.

[If it isn't another rampaging Pokemon, Sagi supposes that makes things his fault either way, for what little it matters. Seeing people's souls does sound like an exhausting power to use at the best of times... Yeah, he'll go with that.]

We can go back.

[He doesn't want to. He realises Hythlo didn't seem to want to, either. He wants to push on, cut off the head, strike back in some way to affirm that they aren't completely at this unknown presence's mercy. But sometimes you have to cut your losses.]

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-21 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hythlo grunts in reply and forces himself to stand up proper. His eyes still hurt like hell, but he'll be damned if they have to turn back because of him slowing Sagi down.]

N-No. We go on. Didn't come this far to waste it, eh?

[He finally manages to get his breathing under control and fishes out his mask from his pocket. It's not going to be much help, but it does restrict his vision a little, and it's better than choosing between more strain or complete blindness.

After replacing it, he stays still for a moment, then drops a hand on Sagi's shoulder, without looking at him.]

Listen... It's not your fault. Some things we just are.

[...]

... It's... protecting you, I think. T-Trying to.

[Imagine not being a cryptid and also not giving teens PTSD all the time.]
scension: (Primordial Cactus)

[personal profile] scension 2020-10-21 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[Duress may not have been too far off. Patient as Sagi wants to be with someone in evident pain, the pity in Hythlo's voice strikes a nerve. He reaches up and pushes Hythlo's hand away, not violently but firmly.]

No, you listen! If you're coming along, I need you to stop freaking out every time you use that on me. I don't want to run off without you, but you're not helping.

[The expression he fixes Hythlo with isn't quite a glare, though it's close. Hythlo is not the deserving target of his anger right now. He's just frustrated.]

You can't even tell me what it is that hurts so much to look at.

[personal profile] weenwoon 2020-10-22 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to use it!

[It comes out before Hythlo can stop himself, the echoes of the angry shout ringing across the alley, and he feels guilty immediately. At the same time... it is the truth. He knows that technically, he did ask for it, yet... all he wanted was something familiar, a piece of his former existence, something that made him happy. But it looks like taking away his friends, his home, his entire world was not enough, and it's like a cruel joke that now his sight only violates people's boundaries, with nothing to show but their suffering. Perhaps something is trying to teach him a lesson, beat it home how cruel the world really is, and Hythlo doesn't know if he will be able to stand that knowledge.

But--Sagi has the right of it, too. He has the right to know, and it's not him Hythlo should be angry at.

He raises a hand in a pacificating gesture.]

M-My apologies... Allow me...

[The ringing pain is slowly subsiding, though he doesn't dare open his eyes yet. He takes a few deep breaths, trying to gather himself together, find words to describe it in a language that knows nothing of the sight.]

It is... akin to one body made out of two. You, the bigger one, but parts are replaced--with those of a different species, but made to function the same. Some are missing. Cut out. I do not know. [He takes another deep breath, less shaky this time.] The other within you... the first time, it was inert. Now there is a black substance of some sort, a mist. Trying to... restore you, I think. Within it all, there is a creature, a monster, perhaps. I cannot tell.

[He chuckles, darkly.]

'Tis not the worst thing I have seen today, not by a long margin. It is not too different from creatures one could find in my world. But... the way it manifests... [He pauses, his words failing him. It would be easier if both he and Sagi knew what videogames glitching looks like.] 'Tis as though it is--trying to exist at the same time you are. Like looking at something that is both close and far away, times a dozen. There is... no place for it here, no natural layer of existence to occupy, so it must try to... force its way here, perhaps. I-I do not know, I've yet to see aught like this. It is that discrepancy that hurts to look at, like blinding light and utter darkness at the same time.
